Women's Enterprise Ambassadors

At the PROWESS Conference in February 2007, Margaret Hodge MP announced her intention to recruit a network of inspirational Ambassadors to encourage more women to set up their own business.

The 1000 ambassadors will be recruited by the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and Enterprise Insight, with each region asked to find more than 100 potential candidates.

Kevin Steele, Chief Executive of Enterprise Insight and the Make Your Mark Campaign added that “Ambassadors for women’s enterprise will help generate more self-belief among women to start a business and provide the culture change needed to boost the rates of entrepreneurship in the UK.”

Who can be an Ambassador?

Ambassadors can come from a diverse range of backgrounds:

  • Business people
  • The business support sector
  • Leaders who are already inspiring women to set up in business - people who are actively involved in networks or leading them; writing articles for the press; providing mentoring or advice on business; people with experience of starting up or being in business; or those contributing to community groups.

Ambassadors do not have to be female, but must have a passion for women’s enterprise.

One North East will work with the media and with regional and national bodies such as Business Link and the Sub Regional Partners to raise awareness of the regional Ambassadors Programme.  Ambassadors would be contacted by these organisations when opportunities arise for Ambassadors to become involved – for example, speaking at events, press coverage, or getting involved with Enterprise Week.
