Quality of Place

Over £100 million will be invested by One NorthEast during 2007-09 in developing key regeneration sites across the region. By working with partners such as the urban regeneration companies, local councils and English Partnerships and levering substantial amounts of private sector investment, our work in ‘place-making’ is creating internationally significant city and town centre developments.

Already underway is a visionary scheme to transform Durham City, The Discovery Quarter in Newcastle, Middlehaven in Middlesbrough and
Sunderland’s Sunniside – all of which will see major improvements made to the built and natural environment, improving business premises, housing,
leisure and retail facilities and the public realm.

And in rural areas, an equally ambitious approach is being taken to target investment in market towns. Masterplanning work has begun in Berwick and the public has been involved in developing regeneration plans for Barnard Castle, Guisborough and Alnwick.

The transformation of a former cement works in Eastgate, Weardale into a groundbreaking ecovillage is also at the masterplanning stage.
