Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and Collaborative Innovation Partnerships
KTPs and CIPs (or mini KTPs) can be great business solutions for companies looking to develop innovative products, services and processes. These are cost effective methods of gaining access to well qualified people and experts within further and higher education institutions who can also help to take their business forward.
Once the scope of a project, with the relevant university, college or research organisation has been agreed and approved, a student or graduate (Associate) can then be appointed to facilitate the transfer of knowledge between the knowledge organisation and the business.
In the case of KTPs, the agreed project can be for between one and three years whereas CIPs are more suitable for shorter projects of six to nine months. With both, the overall aim is to make a step change in an identified high priority area for the business.
Whilst both initiatives contribute to the cost of employing an Associate, the business is also expected to contribute to a proportion of his or her salary costs.
Businesses of all sizes in most industries, as well as commercial and public sectors, can take part in both initiatives.
One NorthEast, the primary sponsor for the North East region, funds projects which meet the following criteria:
1. Areas of industrial opportunity:
- Energy and the Environment
- Healthcare and Health Sciences
- Process Industries
- Emerging Technologies
- Digital Media and Technology
2. Enabling the transition to be a more innovative economy through excellent Design
3. Newcastle Science City
