How To Apply

The Grant for Business Investment is available throughout the year.  If you think you have a project that might qualify for the GBI scheme it is usually recommended that you contact Business Link. Business Link is the main gateway to all business support both publicly and privately funded. Business Link advisers provide independent advice and guidance on the type of business support that will best fit the individual needs of your business.

Visit your local Business Link or alternatively give them a call on 0845 600 9006.

The GBI scheme is administered by One North East's Business Finance Team. An initial enquiry meeting may take place to discuss the activities of your business and discuss your project plans.

If your project meets the criteria of the Grant for Business Investment, we may ask you to submit a formal application.  This will include:

  • An application form (available below)
  • Financial Appendices (available below)
  • Last 3 years full accounts and up-to-date management accounts
  • Evidence of your own share of your funding
  • Business Plan
  • Additional supplementary information, as required

Please also see the 'Checklist' in the Application form.

A decision on whether your application has been successful will be made within 20 working days for applications under £250,000, and 30 working days for those over £250,000, provided your application is fully completed and accompanied by all the relevant supporting and financial information.  More complex cases may take longer to appraise.

Grant applications up to £2 million are appraised within One North East by the Business Finance Team; however applications between £250,000 and £2 million are referred to the North East Industrial Development Board.  Grant applications over £2 million will be assessed by BIS in London.

It is essential that no commitment to the project has been made prior to an offer of grant being made as this would render the application ineligible.

The grant is normally paid in instalments upon achievement of capital expenditure and job targets which are set out in the formal offer of grant assistance (Offer Letter).
