The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are not just about sport - or about London. One of the key commitments of the 2012 Games is that they will benefit the whole of the UK and provide people of all ages with the impetus and inspiration to improve their general health and physical well-being.
Here is North East England we want to ensure that people are able to make the most of opportunities provided by London 2012 and are committed to creating a rich legacy of culturally aware, active communities and individuals contributing to regional life.
As a region our aims are:
- Participation of individuals and communities from across North East England in the full range of cultural, health and educational opportunities associated with London 2012.
- North East England will showcase excellence and the region's passion for innovative skills and ideas
- Transformation of communities and individals across North East England through culture, health and education initiatives
Get Set Programme
The Get Set Programme aims to inspire children to be the best they can be. The Programme is a range of flexible, interactive learning resources targeted at 3-19 year olds and designed to get them thinking about the Olympic and Paralympic values - with games, factsheets, films, news articles and much more.
To find out more visit the Get Set website at www.london2012.com/get-involved/education and see how you can inspire children and learners to be the best they can be.

Type 2 Diabetes Project
The 2012 Games are being used as a 'hook' to get communities moving and improving their health.
As an example, the implementation of the Type 2 diabetes project in Middlesbrough used the 2012 Games as a hook to demonstrate that moderate levels of physical activity can prevent the onset and delay the progression of Type 2 diabetes. To read more on this project, click here.
Culture in the Community
Through the Legacy Trust UK Generation 2012 Programme, children and young people are being encouraged to be decision makers and drivers of culture. Visit the Generation 2012 website at www.generation2012.org.uk to see what part you could play in this exciting initiative.
Regional partners are working with the London 2012 sponsors to embed new technology as a means of generating new ways of making, developing and participating in culture.
Contact your local council to find out about their 2012 programme of cultural and educational initiatives.
Cultural Olympiad
The Cultural Olympiad "puts culture at the heart of the 2012 Games - encouraging participation and celebrating the cultures that make up the UK" (Source www.london2012.com).
The Olympiad aims to encourage the involvement of communities across the UK - bringing together culture and sport in innovative collaborations and developing the regional repsonse to national projects such as Artists taking the lead - one of the ten projects for the Cultural Olympiad.
